COVID-19: Economic Effects on Women
Recent WIFO Research Brief by Julia Bock-Schappelwein, Ulrike Famira-Mühlberger and Christine Mayrhuber
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing employment losses in the labour market, as last seen around 70 years ago, and a massive increase in unemployment. Although the decline in employment for women is less severe than for men, it is concentrated in economic sectors that are important for women's employment.
The increase in unemployment is also lower among women, but tends to affect the more highly qualified, while among men the low-skilled are more affected. The double burden of work and care responsibilities, resulting from home office or employment in the systemically important sectors of the economy, affects women more than men.
