Economic Development in the Austrian Federal Provinces in 2021

Weaker Upswing in Tourism-intensive Regions
In the second year affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Austrian economy recovered noticeably, showing an upswing in all federal provinces. Nevertheless, the after-effects of the crisis continued to influence the regional economic picture.

Tyrol and Salzburg, as the most tourism-intensive provinces, lagged behind the other provinces in terms of growth. Except for the hotel and restaurant industry, all sectors of the economy benefitted from the upswing, so that employment quickly returned to its pre-crisis level – only in Tyrol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg was this still not the case in 2021.
