The Gender Gap in Pensions as the Tip of the Iceberg
The gender pension gap reflects the cumulative effect of structural inequalities that women face throughout their educational trajectories, employment histories, and caregiving responsibilities. Due to the insurance-based principle of the Austrian pension system, these inequalities are transmitted into old-age income outcomes. Overall, the Austrian pension system is neither designed nor equipped to compensate for pre-existing structural inequalities over the life course.
