Helmut Mahringer is Senior Economist at WIFO and has been working Research Group "Labour Market, Income and Social Security"
since 1999. His research interests are in the labour market. His research focusses on the impact analysis of labour market
and social policy, the forecasting of labour market developments and labour supply, the flexibilisation of labour markets
and the development and combating of unemployment. He is also strongly involved in an initiative to improve empirical analyses
based on administrative individual data and the application of microeconometric methods. Recent studies deal with causal effects
of active labour market policy, with randomised controlled trials of counselling for the unemployed, with the design of the
unemployment insurance system, with questions of work incentives and with labour market segmentation. He studied Economics
at the Universities of Vienna and Linz (PhD 2005) and Social Work in Salzburg. Before joining WIFO, he worked as a social
worker in social psychiatry and as a research fellow at Joanneum Research. He was a visiting researcher at W.E.Upjohn Institute
for Employment Research (USA), at MOTU (New Zealand) and at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). He is a national expert
in international projects and networks (e.g., EU Mutual Learning Programme, Skillsnet of CEDEFOP), lectures and publishes
in international journals (e.g., Empirical Economics, Review of Economics of the Household, Journal of Labour Market Research).
