Gender Health Disparities in the World of Work

26.07.2019

Keynote Address by WIFO Researcher Thomas Leoni at Vienna City Hall

WIFO researcher Thomas Leoni recently gave a lecture at an interdisciplinary conference in Vienna's City Hall on the subject of "Health of Women and Men in the World of Work", which was organised by the City of Vienna and the Women's Health Centre FEM South.

Women and men are exposed to different health risks in the workplace. The sexes are unequally distributed in the economic sectors, but also in the activities within a company. In addition, gender-specific, work-independent health resources and stressors have an impact on the world of work.

Women and men show numerous differences with regard to their health, which is also evident in the light of work-related health indicators such as sickness absence and accident rates. The gender-specific distribution according to sectors, occupations and forms of employment and the associated working conditions and job burdens play an important role in explaining these health-related gender differences. Women and men, however, also occupy different positions at the interface between professional and private or family life and set gender-specific accents with their health awareness and behaviour. On the basis of current figures for Austria, the keynote presentation gave an insight into these diverse gender differences, which are also important for the design of workplace health promotion and workplace health management.
