Burgenland's Tourism Industry Celebrates
WIFO and Statistics Austria Presented Regional Tourism Satellite Account at Gala Evening
The Burgenland tourism industry was the focus of a gala evening on 20 January in the Haydn Festival Hall of Esterházy Palace. The aim was to review past year’s performance. With an increase of 3.1 percent, a new record of 3,144,232 overnight stays was achieved for Burgenland.
However, since arrivals and overnight stays say little about how much added value and employment tourism has created regionally, WIFO tourism researcher Oliver Fritz and the head of tourism statistics at Statistics Austria, Peter Laimer, also had their say.
According to their account, tourism will contribute 9.2 percent to Burgenland's gross regional product in 2017 via direct and indirect linkages. 9.8 percent of all full-time jobs were associated with the provision of tourist services for guests from Austria and abroad. These figures confirm the great economic importance of tourism in Burgenland.
