Austrian Innovation Performance in the RTI Monitor

The numerous data presented allow innovation policy interrelationships and their development over time to be analysed. These include framework conditions such as education and regulation, the RTI core system with universities and companies, and cross-cutting issues such as environment and climate, circular economy, gender equality and efficiency. Overall, Austria is well above the EU average, just below the leading innovation countries in the EU, but clearly below the level of the global top 3.

The financing of RTI performs particularly well; the biggest problem areas are digitisation and start-ups. "In the last two decades, Austria has managed to strongly push the use of research and development in fundamentally less technology-intensive industries and thus contribute to international competitiveness. Now we need to focus additionally on tackling the major challenges facing society, such as climate change and digitisation", says WIFO economist Jürgen Janger. The RTI Monitor makes it possible to access tailored information for this, both for innovation performance as well as for relevant Council studies and recommendations at a glance.

"With the RTI Monitor, the Council is making a significant contribution to science-based policymaking in Austria. By linking for the first time the indicators used to measure the performance of the Austrian RTI system with the goals of the RTI Strategy 2030 and the impact goals of the federal government, the innovation policy interrelationships and effects become visible and comprehensible", explained Council Vice Chair Sabine Herlitschka at the presentation of the RTI Monitor.
