Die weltweite Konjunkturschwäche hält an, wenngleich Vorlaufindikatoren auf eine langsame Erholung zeigen. Auch in Österreich
wächst die Zuversicht der Unternehmen und privaten Haushalte, wie der aktuelle WIFO-Konjunkturtest zeigt. Ende 2012 war die
Dynamik noch verhalten, sowohl Exporte als auch Industrieproduktion flauten ab. Auch der Einzelhandel verzeichnete Umsatzeinbußen.
Positive Impulse kamen zuletzt hingegen vom Tourismus. Die Inflation blieb auch im Dezember hoch, wobei die Preissteigerung
von Mineralölprodukten immer mehr an Gewicht verliert. Die Konjunkturschwäche belastet den Arbeitsmarkt, im Vormonatsvergleich
stagnierte die Beschäftigung erneut. Gleichzeitig erhöhte sich die Zahl der Arbeitslosen nochmals.

Leading indicators point to a slowdown in the pace of the economic downturn in Austria and the EU overall. Uncertainty among
businesses and private households is gradually diminishing. In Austria, economic activity remained subdued at the end of 2012.
While industry and trade activity were sluggish, sales gains were reported by the tourism industry.
Global economic activity remains weak, although leading indicators suggest that it is slowly recovering. Confidence among
businesses and private households is growing also in Austria, according to WIFO's most recent business cycle survey. At the
end of last year, economic momentum still remained subdued, reflected in a decline in exports and in industrial activity.
Retailers also reported a drop in sales. By contrast, a positive impulse has recently been provided by tourism. Inflation
remained high also in December; price increases for mineral oil products are becoming increasingly less important in this
context. The weak economy weighs on the labour market; employment growth stagnated again on a month-on-month basis. At the
same time the number of unemployed people also rose further.
