Margit Schratzenstaller at a Public Hearing of the German Bundestag

Video: Experts in European Committee Call for More Money for EU Budget
On 21 October 2019, a public hearing on the EU budget took place in the European Committee of the German Bundestag. WIFO economist Margit Schratzenstaller and other experts appealed for a higher EU budget – this implies reforms that increase the European added value of the EU budget.

Margit Schratzenstaller from the Austrian Institute of Economic Research emphasised the added value of the European Union for all member countries, which goes beyond the pure cost-benefit level. "The challenges are greater than ever," she said regarding digitalisation, climate change and immigration. "However, the way the EU budget is currently structured means that its contribution to solutions is relatively limited."
