A well-functioning social security system is a stable foundation for a society and its sustainable successful development. Social security, inclusion, participation, solidarity and equitable distribution are essential conditions for a successful community. The principle of self-administration, which has long existed and is deeply rooted in Austria and Germany, is often regarded as a building block of a living democracy. The principle of self-administration can help to ensure that the interests of the insured groups concerned are included in the social security system and, under certain conditions, enables citizens to participate actively in the direct fulfilment of state tasks. Within the framework of the 12th Social State Enquete, the functioning of social self-administration systems will be examined and the question of how self-administration can be shaped as the governance model of the future will be posed.
