The efficiency of public transport systems is a fundamental prerequisite for the economic competitiveness and the quality of life of urban regions. The safeguarding and the extension of the public transport supply aims at the reduction of the massive car traffic in agglomerations which leads to the deterioration of the environment and the impairment of space, the society and the economy. Demand-oriented financing of public transport services should be recognised as an important public responsibility even in periods of budget consolidation. The current financing system for public transport in Austria should be adapted to the future challenges of urban mobility such as the requirements of climate protection, demographic change and ongoing suburbanisation of households.
