"Energy in Discussion": Heating in Urban Areas

Joint Event between Wien Energie and WIFO
On 27 November 2024, a joint event between Wien Energie and WIFO on the topic of the urban heating sector took place at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research.

The evening began with a keynote speech by Albana Ilo (Associate Professor of Electrical Energy Distribution Systems at the Vienna University of Technology). In her presentation, she emphasized the importance of a systemic approach to solving the energy trilemma, which encompasses the simultaneous achievement of ecological sustainability, energy security and energy justice. Furthermore, Ms. Ilo emphasised that sector coupling plays a central role in achieving these goals.

Ms. Ilo's presentation was followed by a content-related discussion moderated by WIFO economist Claudia Kettner and with the participation of Albana Ilo, Daniela Kletzan-Slamanig (WIFO economist) and Michaela Deutsch (Head of Energy Services at Wien Energie).

In the following panel discussion, various aspects were discussed, including the need for a suitable legal framework for the heating transition, increasing energy efficiency and avoiding duplicate structures in order to ensure cost efficiency. The discussion with the audience helped to shed light on different perspectives and develop solutions for the challenges in the urban heating sector.
