Part-time Employment in Austria in 2024

Video: Press Conference by the Vienna Chamber of Labour and WIFO
An evaluation carried out by the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) on behalf of the Vienna Chamber of Labour based on the microcensus shows data on part-time work in Austria in 2024 – broken down by gender, age, family type, region, and industry. WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr and Vienna Chamber of Labour President Renate Anderl presented the results at a press conference on 20 February 2026.

WIFO Director Gabriel Felbermayr: "Around 170,000 part-time employees in Austria would like to increase their working hours by an average of twelve hours per week – this potential needs to be better utilised. Above all, this requires comprehensive, affordable childcare, the expansion of care services, and fair career opportunities and working conditions for part-time workers. Particularly for those below the marginal earnings threshold, we need to consider improving the incentives in the tax system."

"Part-time work is real work and deserves full respect", says President of the Vienna Chamber of Labour Renate Anderl. "Part-time employees have a variety of reasons for their working hours – care responsibilities, illness, second jobs, or a lack of full-time positions."
