Green and Digital Investments for Austria's Recovery

WIFO Senior Economist Klaus S. Friesenbichler as a Panelist at a OeNB-EIB Webinar
On 18 March 2021, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) hosted a Webinar on "Investment into a sustainable recovery in Austria". WIFO industrial economist Klaus S. Friesenbichler emphasised the need for investment in digitalisation and decarbonisation.

At the high-level event, the results of the current EIB Investment Survey were presented and their importance for Austrian policy making was discussed. Friesenbichler sketched Austria's current economic situation and elaborated on shifting the policy lens towards green and digital investments.

Friesenbichler sees the key challenges related to the digitalisation in organisational innovations, which should accompany ICT-investments, and in the broadband infrastructure. "Investments into the decarbonisation takes place in a great variety of sectoral and technological environments. They are the expression of a necessary structural change, which will create both profitable markets but also stranded investments", said Friesenbichler.
