Daughters' Day at WIFO: The Carbon Footprint of a Vacation Trip

Video: Insight into Economic Research
The 25th Daughters' Day of the City of Vienna took place on 23 April 2026. This year, WIFO once again invited interested girls to gain exciting insights into the world of economic research. With the theme "How big is the climate footprint of your vacation trip?", this year's workshop focused on tourism, its environmental impact and its sustainable design.

After an introduction to the topic, WIFO economists Anna Burton and Daniela Kletzan-Slamanig as well as Susanne Markytan and Katharina Köberl-Schmid analysed the last vacations of the participants and the WIFO team. The associated CO2 emissions were calculated and the results summarised in a graphic.

In creative group work, the girls then slipped into the role of scientists. Together, they developed plans for their dream vacation with the goal of spending 14 days by the sea in Europe. They not only had to decide on a destination, but also calculate the distance, make decisions about the means of transportation used (for travel to and from the destination), the type of accommodation and food as well as activities during the vacation. Based on this information, a calculation tool from Graz University of Technology was used to quantify the CO2 emissions associated with the vacation.

In addition to the strong influence of the means of transportation on the total amount of holiday-related emissions, the influence of nutrition (vegetarian or not) and various activities (e.g. visits to spas) was also made transparent. The results of the group work were documented on posters.

The girls were also invited to conduct video interviews with two WIFO economists. Together with Markus Kiesenhofer and Verena Kraushofer from the communications team, the interview questions were developed, daily media work was discussed and the studio for video call interviews was visited.

After a joint lunch, the groups presented their results.

"The Daughters' Day 2026 at WIFO was a complete success and not only gave the participants valuable insights into economic research, but also into the importance of sustainable action", says WIFO economist Daniela Kletzan-Slamanig.
