Christine Mayrhuber Awarded Vienna Women's Prize
"The Vienna Women's Prize stands for commitment, courage and the willingness of women to follow their own paths. It is about prominently demonstrating that women have opportunities and chances in all situations in life and that Vienna wants to help them realise these. Our prize winners were honoured by the jury for their work and their paths. At the same time, they are also role models for others by showing how to open doors," said Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Women's Issues Kathrin Gaál.
In her acceptance speech, Mayrhuber emphasised: "Receiving the Vienna Women's Prize is a great honour and an unexpected recognition of my many years of analysis of the structural economic inequalities that women face on a daily basis. The economic sciences are still predominantly in male hands. I hope that receiving the Vienna Women's Prize will spark young women's interest in economics. The complex economic challenges can only be solved sustainably if women are given an equal say in shaping the economy."
Mayrhuber has been working in the research group "Labour Market Economics, Income and Social Security" since 1999 and has been Deputy Director at WIFO since September 2023. She is also Chair of the Pension Commission. Her research focuses on income development and distribution, the structure and financing of pension insurance, and the redistributive effects of welfare state structures. Before joining WIFO, she studied economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and was a research assistant at the Institute for Advanced Studies. In 2013, she was awarded the Käthe Leichter Prize.
The award winners received a statue designed by artist Vivien Schneider-Siemssen. Blind singer Sofia Reyna, winner of the Burgenland Song Challenge, provided the musical accompaniment. The independent jury consisted of journalists Brigitte Handlos, Hanna Herbst and Tessa Prager.
