Impact of Digitisation on the Development of Economic Areas
Digitisation changes the meaning of space and distance. Due to the reduction of transaction costs, the possibilities of providing services over greater distances are increasing significantly. Nevertheless, digitisation does not necessarily lead to economic convergence between peripheral and central spaces. Agglomeration advantages and a better equipment with technology, human capital and infrastructure, when human work becomes more complex, further strengthen the location advantages of central regions. Digital technologies nevertheless offer development opportunities for rural areas if the necessary infrastructure and qualified human capital are available. Digitisation also changes global trade flows and fragments value chains. Especially for small and medium-sized enterprises and the service sector, the increasing use of digital technologies increases export potential.
