Key Indicators of Climate Change and the Energy Sector in 2017. Special Topic: Consumption-based Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The tenth edition of the WIFO key indicators of the energy sector and climate change draws on the latest statistical data which show that, in 2015, it was not possible to decouple real economic performance (+1 percent) from greenhouse gas emissions (+3.1 percent) and gross domestic energy consumption (+2.4 percent). The process of decoupling total energy consumption from economic activity observed in the past years thus could not be continued. This year's focus was on a consumption-based greenhouse gas inventory. An analysis based on OECD data indicates that small but developed economies have a rather high net import share of CO2 emissions, whereas large developed countries and emerging economiess report lower net imports or net exports of CO2 emissions, respectively.
