
Second Quarter of 2025: Domestic Economy Weak Again
According to first calculations, real GDP in the second quarter of 2025 was slightly above the level of the previous quarter (+0.1 percent, first quarter also +0.1 percent, key figure according to Eurostat specifications). Economic momentum thus remained weak. Compared with the previous year, this also represents a slight increase of +0.1 percent compared with the second quarter of 2024.
After initial signs of recovery in industry in the first quarter of 2025, momentum is currently weak. Value added in sections B to E (NACE 2008) stagnated in the second quarter (–0.1 percent, according to +0.8 percent in the first quarter of 2025), while it fell again in construction (–0.5 percent after –0.3 percent in the first quarter).
By contrast, the service sectors provided predominantly positive impetus. Value added in the information and communication, financial and insurance activities, real estate activities (NACE 2008, sections J to L) rose by 0.2 percent, in other business activities (NACE 2008, sections M and N) by 0.5 percent and in other services (NACE 2008, sections R to U) by 0.8 percent. In trade, transportation, accommodation and food service activities (NACE 2008, sections G to I), however, it remained virtually unchanged (–0.1 percent).
Private household consumption (including private non-profit organisations) was positive (+0.3 percent compared with the previous quarter), while public consumption was weaker (–0.2 percent).
Exports stagnated in the second quarter. With imports rising by 0.9 percent, net exports made a negative contribution to economic development. Gross fixed capital formation recorded slight growth of 0.3 percent in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter (–0.2 percent in the first quarter).

The WIFO Flash Estimate is a first estimate for the past quarter. It is based on Statistics Austria's quarterly accounts and includes GDP as well as components in the form of seasonally and working day-adjusted rates of change compared to the previous quarter (key figure according to Eurostat specifications).
On 5 September 2025, Statistics Austria will publish the quarterly data for GDP and main aggregates for the second quarter of 2025 based on more recent data.
