The Institute's scientific work is carried out by five Research Groups which operate along a set of principles: strengthening scientific creativity, promoting own responsibility and initiative, and identification with the institute's targets. Within each Research Group a coordination person serves its term for a limited period.
WIFO's operational structure is designed to account for the fact that economic policy consulting typically requires a combination of competences as well as rapid response to current problems and efficient research management. WIFO's operational structure therefore is focused at arranging work in projects where teams with clearly assigned responsibilities and work-sharing tasks are required to cooperate on a temporary basis.
Both the management and research tiers are assisted by executive management on one level and the WIFO service and administrative staff on the other. WIFO's output is directly facilitated by the teams "library", "Publications and editorial work, subscription office", the "design and implementation of surveys" and "data and information management" (especially with regard to maintaining individual data). WIFO's excellent data infrastructure is maintained essentially by scientific assistants.
