The energy and resource transition is usually not perceived as a task of spatial planning. One research field of the Institute
of Spatial Planning, Environmental Planning and Land Rearrangement (IRUB) at the University of Natural Resources and Life
Sciences in Vienna is the identification of spatial aspects of the energy and resource shift towards renewable energy and
raw material supply. The presentation deals with the systemic interlinkages between the energy and resource transition and
space, the challenges and opportunities for spatial development in urban, suburban and rural areas, the expected environmental
and socio-economic impacts as well as control approaches that can be pursued in spatial planning.
