The WIFO-Monatsberichte (monthly reports) contain research results and publications by WIFO staff on national and international economic developments based on sound economic analyses. Additionally, important key figures on the international and Austrian economic situation are published in the WIFO-Monatsberichte.

Die österreichische Wirtschaftspolitik steht vor großen Herausforderungen. Durch das Fehlen einer mit Parlamentsmehrheit ausgestatteten Regierung kam es zwischen Ende Mai 2019 und Jahresanfang 2020 zu einer Zwangspause in der politischen Arbeit, die Reformen weiter in die Zukunft verschob. Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, ausgehend von einem Rückblick auf die zentralen Themen des vergangenen Jahres die Herausforderungen für die künftige Wirtschaftspolitik im Überblick darzustellen. Anders als in den üblichen Beiträgen in den WIFO-Monatsberichten wird ein primär qualitativer Zugang gewählt – die quantitative empirische Evidenz wird in die Referenzen verwiesen.

Austria's economic policy at the turn of the year. Review and challenges in the future
Austria's economic policy faces major challenges. The lack of a government with a majority in parliament between the end of May 2019 and the beginning of 2020 led to a forced pause in political work, which further postponed reforms into the future. The aim of this article is to present an overview of the challenges for future economic policy, starting with a review of the central issues of the past year. In contrast to the usual contributions in the WIFO-Monatsberichte (monthly reports), a primarily qualitative approach is chosen – the quantitative empirical evidence is referred to the references.
