1996: A Slow Year for Agriculture. Development of Farming and Forestry in the Austrian Länder
With regard to output and incomes, 1996 was a slow year for Austrian agriculture and forestry. The incomes achieved from agricultural production declined by about one tenth from their 1995 peak. The loss was mainly caused by the scheduled reduction in the degressive payments made over four years to compensate farmers for the consequences of EU membership, and by higher indirect taxes. As an additional factor, farmers were faced with detrimental developments in their product and input markets.
