Indicators of the Austrian Energy System
Based on the energy and useful energy balance for 2019 recently published by Statistics Austria, indicators are developed that describe the current structures of the Austrian energy system. In addition, values for energy consumption and CO2 emissions compensated for economic activity and outdoor temperature are estimated. The evidence makes clear that structural measures in the energy system in Austria are necessary to be compatible with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and the climate goals of the EU, and to achieve the ambitious national goal of climate neutrality by 2040, as set out in the government program. In the past five years, CO2 emissions have been rising despite efforts to expand renewables. This is an indication that more attention must be paid to the more efficient use of energy.
