Development of Demand for Freight Transport Services in Austria between 1995 and 2015. Results of an Input-Output Analysis
Taking into account services purchased indirectly via intermediate input relationships, wholesale trade and sectors of the basic materials industry had the highest demand for rail and road transport services in 2015. As international comparisons show, the distribution of aggregate transport demand among different modes of transport is related to the share of material goods production in total economic output, with the share of demand for rail transport services increasing as the share of material goods increases. However, both the share of transport services in production value and the share of rail transport in freight transport demand turn out to be lower the higher the technology content of an industry. In view of its industrial structure, the share of rail transport in total freight transport demand was relatively high in Austria in 2015.
