A further extension of the deadline for the UK to withdraw from the EU prevents a "no deal brexit". The European Council agrees on a proposal for filling the top posts in the European Union. China's Prime Minister Li Keqiang promotes in Europe the "One Belt, One Road" initiative, the "New Silk Road". Eastern Central European countries, including 17 EU members, are showing great interest in China's massive infrastructure investments. The foreign trade conflict between the USA and Iran continues under threat of further sanctions by the USA against Iran and the countries exporting to Iran. China is responding to the imposition of import duties on goods from China with further punitive duties on imports from the USA. Mexico is the first country to ratify the NAFTA successor agreement USMCA. – In order to harmonise social assistance benefits throughout Austria, the National Council adopts a new Basic Law on Social Assistance. Following the dissolution of the federal government in Austria and the establishment of a transitional government, new elections to the National Council will take place on 29 September 2019. Parts of the tax reform announced in May 2019 could still be decided by the National Council in July.
