Austria's Innovation Performance in International Comparison

Over the past few decades, Austria has increased its monetary resources for research, technology, and innovation to a level above that of the leading innovation countries in the EU. However, the performance or impact of these funds, measured in terms of publications, patents, and innovation-intensive start-ups, for example, remains well below that of the leading EU countries, and the gap is even more pronounced globally. The ongoing performance problems, Austria's generally declining competitiveness, and budgetary restrictions call for structural reforms to increase performance through the efficient use of resources.
