Achim Truger, member of the German Council of Economic Experts, presents the key findings and recommendations from the fall report. Afterwards, Gabriel Felbermayr (WIFO Director), Helene Schuberth (Austrian Trade Union Federation) and Markus Marterbauer (Vienna Chamber of Labour) will discuss with him how the current German economic situation is affecting Austria, the challenges from a budget policy perspective and what can be recommended to a new federal government for getting out of the crisis.

Following the downturn in economic growth triggered by the energy crisis and monetary tightening, both German and Austrian economies remain in an unusually tenacious stagnation. Industry, which is central to employment and economy, is suffering from weak investment demand and uncertainty. This means that not only economic policy but also the wage policy of the social partners are facing an extremely difficult initial situation.

The German Council of Economic Experts is presenting its annual report at a crucial time – a report that could provide important stimuli not only for Germany, but also for Austria.

What are the current options for action? Are the EU fiscal rules and the German debt brake in our way? And how can we shape a forward-looking, climate-friendly economic policy?
