On September 18-19, 2025, the FIW – Research Centre International Economics hosted a workshop titled "Firms and Workers in the Global Economy" at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. The event brought together leading researchers and scholars to explore the intersection of labor economics and international economics, focusing on how global economic dynamics shape firms and workers.
The workshop featured five sessions chaired by experts from JKU Linz, WIFO, and other partner institutions. The presented papers covered a wide range of topics, including labor migration, the impact of unions on wage setting, trade barriers, workplace heterogeneity, and the role of job benefits in job searches. This mix of research highlighted the critical linkages between labor markets, international trade, and economic policy.
A dedicated PhD session provided early-career researchers the opportunity to present their work on topics such as trade, innovation, and economic policy, further enriching the discussions at the workshop.
The FIW Research Centre International Economics provides a research platform, information on topics relevant to foreign trade and access to economic data. It is a cooperative project of the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the University of Vienna, the Johannes Kepler University Linz, the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck, the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO), the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) and the Institute of Advanced Studies (IHS).
