Emissions Decouple from Economic Output
Estimate of Austrian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Based on the Medium-term Forecast of the Austrian Economy 2025 to 2029
The aim of this project is to develop a suitable method for quantifying an estimate of greenhouse gas emissions over a five-year period, based on and coherent with WIFO's medium-term forecast. The results show that, under the assumptions made, final energy consumption is likely to remain stable between 2023 and 2029, that emissions have been relatively decoupled from economic output since 2022 and will decouple in absolute terms from 2025. Greenhouse gas emissions will fall to 61 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents by 2029, which is 23 percent below the 1990 level.
