Automatic Pension Splitting Will Hardly be Able to Reduce Old-age Poverty Among Women
In a European comparison, the gender gap in pensions is particularly high in Austria at the expense of women. The at-risk-of-poverty rate for women aged 65 and older is also high, at 17 percent it is significantly higher than the overall at-risk-of-poverty rate (14 percent). The federal government is planning to introduce automatic pension splitting to reduce poverty among women in old age. The details have not yet been specified, but a first analysis does not suggest a major poverty-reducing effect.
