A Regional Tourism Satellite Account for Salzburg
The tourism industry is an important economic factor for Salzburg: according to the regional tourism satellite account developed by Statistics Austria and WIFO, in 2018 total spending on vacation and business trips, visits of relatives and friends, as well as stays at secondary residences and weekend homes added up to 5,643 million €. Of this amount, 64.1 percent was accounted for by foreign visitors, 35.6 percent by domestic travellers, and 0.3 percent was spent in the course of staying in second homes. In 2018, value added generated directly by tourism activities in Salzburg, including business travel, came up to 3,446 million € and thereby accounted for a share in the gross regional product of 12.0 percent. The total value-added effects of tourism in Salzburg contributed 15.9 percent to the regional economic output. Moreover, 34,000 full-time jobs (FTE based on employees and self-employed persons) in the state can be attributed directly to typical tourism industries (share of 12.4 percent in total employment). Across all economic sectors 44,900 full-time equivalents or 16.4 percent of all jobs (FTE) in Salzburg were linked to the tourism industry in 2018.
