A Regional Tourism Satellite Account for Burgenland and Regional Economic Effects of the Non-touristic Leisure Industry
The tourism industry is an important economic factor for Burgenland: according to the regional tourism satellite account developed by Statistics Austria and WIFO, in 2018 total spending on vacation and business trips, visits of relatives and friends, as well as stays at secondary residences and weekend homes added up to 1,005 million €. Of this amount, 20.9 percent was accounted for by foreign visitors, 78.3 percent by domestic travellers, and 0.9 percent was spent in the course of staying in second homes. In 2018, value added generated directly by tourism activities in Burgenland, including business travel, came up to 578 million € and thereby accounted for a share in the gross regional product of 6.4 percent. The total value-added effects of tourism in Burgenland contributed 8.7 percent to the regional economic output. Moreover, 7,400 full-time jobs (FTE based on employees and self-employed persons) in the state can be attributed directly to typical tourism industries (share of 6.7 percent in total employment). Across all economic sectors 9,500 full-time equivalents or 8.6 percent of all jobs (FTE) in Burgenland were linked to the tourism industry in 2018.
