Wage Differences between Men and Women in Austria from 2005 to 2021
We estimate a gender pay gap of 11.3 percent of the average female wage in 2021, which was lower than in previous years. The adjusted wage gap was 6.4 percent of the average female wage and thus hardly differed from the wage gap in the previous year (6.2 percent). The main reasons for the observed wage differences are that women on average have less work experience than men and systematically take up different occupations than men. Another reason are differences in unobserved characteristics, such as different behaviour in individual wage negotiations.
