Annual Scientific Contribution to the Tourism Reports 2024 to 2027
Tourism expenditure by domestic and foreign guests in Austria amounted to 38.8 billion € in 2024 on the conceptual basis of a tourism satellite account (+5.6 percent compared to 2023). This resulted in direct and indirect value-added effects of 30.3 billion € (+4.7 percent). The tourism industry thus contributed a nominal 6.3 percent to gross domestic product. Tourism-related employment amounted to around 282,000 full-time equivalents in 2024, corresponding to 6.9 percent of the total workforce (based on full-time equivalents). The number of overnight stays rose to 154.3 million in 2024 (+2.1 percent compared to 2023), exceeding the pre-crisis level of 2019 for the first time (+1.1 percent). Arrivals also reached a new high of 46.7 million (+3.3 percent, 2019-2024 also +1,1 percent). Although the nominal travel balance (exports minus imports, including international passenger transport) increased to +10.0 billion € (+5.7 percent), it declined by more than a tenth when adjusted for price effects. With nominal per capita income from international travel of 2,640 €, Austria was once again among the top 5 of 42 destinations in 2024.
