Income in the Health Sector. Analysis of Income Differentials as a Basis

Against the background of high gender pay gaps by industries and occupations the study analyses wages in hospitals, and wage differences according to working time, experience, field of activity and sex with data of the Austrian Labour Force Survey. This sector is characterised by a high share of female employees, by severe physical and mental pressure of work, and the importance of night and shift work. In a further step the findings for hospitals are compared to selected other industries. The empirical results serve as a first step for a wider discussion of job evaluation, the key factors, social and economic implications and possible approaches for reform.
