Retail trade in Vienna: Labour market pertinence, job characteristics, new challenges

Our study analyses the role of retail trade in Vienna's employment system. Based on a broad range of empirical data we identify the developmental specifics of Vienna's retail trade in labour demand, job chararcteristics, earnings and the use of human ressources. We discuss the challenges of e-commerce as well as the growing locational competition between the city core and its hinterland in retailing, and propose evidence-based policy measures to maintain the significance of the sector as an employer in the city.
