Tourism Analysis Winter Season 2019-20

Massive Collapse in Demand Due to the COVID-19 Crisis in the Last Third of the Season
The tourism analysis just published by WIFO for the 2019-20 winter season shows a massive collapse in demand in the last third of the season due to the COVID-19 crisis. For the entire 2019-20 winter season, this means not only a considerable decline in volume of about one fifth (arrivals 22.0 percent, overnight stays 18.1 percent), but also correspondingly high revenue losses (nominal 16.9 percent, real 18.2 percent).

After the pre-season and peak season had been extremely successful (November 2019 to February 2020: guest arrivals +7.0 percent, overnight stays +7.2 percent), demand plummeted in the last third of the season due to the COVID-19 crisis (March to April 2020: arrivals 80.0 percent, overnight stays 72.1 percent).
