At a virtual media talk hosted by "Diskurs. Das Wissenschaftsnetz" on 30 November 2021, Rainer Eppel spoke about the "role of companies in (long-term) unemployment". His contribution was based on three recent WIFO studies, including the "Unternehmensmonitor Arbeitslosigkeit".

"In the public debate, the focus is mostly one-sided on the unemployed and the incentives to take up work. The role of companies in creating and solving the problem, on the other hand, is often underexposed", says Eppel. "Unemployment can only be understood and effectively reduced if both sides, the workforce and the companies, are addressed in their interaction."
