How Sustainable was the Climate Election Campaign?

WIFO Guest Commentary by Angela Köppl and Margit Schratzenstaller in the Daily Newspaper "Die Presse"

While Germany debates the first concrete package of climate policies, WIFO economists Angela Köppl and Margit Schratzenstaller do not yet see a broad national consensus for a consistent climate policy for Austria.

In their guest commentary in the daily newspaper "Die Presse" they question which lessons a future Austrian federal government should/could learn from the German debate.

Germany will miss its climate targets by 2020: Instead of forty percent CO₂ emissions reduction the decline will only be 32 percent compared to the reference year 1990. On 20 September 2019, after months of negotiations in the "climate policies" of the grand coalition the climate protection programme 2030 was passed, which is to be implemented this year and will take effect in the coming years. The four elements on which the programme is based, provide a consistent framework for a comprehensive package of measures to reduce CO₂ emissions.
