Ecological Reform of the Tax System

Guest Article by Angela Köppl and Margit Schratzenstaller
In a recent guest article in the publication "ökoenergie", the two WIFO economists Angela Köppl and Margit Schratzenstaller outline options for an ecological reform of the Austrian tax system.

In the coming decade, Austria faces considerable budgetary expenditure of up to 6.6 billion € if no additional measures are taken to meet climate targets. In addition to ecological, economic and social aspects, budgetary instruments must also be implemented. According to Köppl and Schratzenstaller, the ecological reform of the tax system should be based on three pillars: a move away from climate-harmful subsidies, tax incentives that encourage behaviour and the introduction of new environmental taxes.
