Tourism Analysis: Winter Overnight Stays Slightly Down, Price Effects Weigh on Inflation-adjusted Revenues
From November 2024 to March 2025, demand in Austrian accommodation establishments reached a new record in guest arrivals (17.8 million, +0.8 percent year-on-year). However, the number of overnight stays declined to 64.1 million, 0.6 percent below the level of 2023-24 and 0.9 percent below the peak of 2018-19. Domestic tourism played a key role in supporting overall development (arrivals +1.5 percent, overnight stays +0.6 percent), while international demand was weaker or even declined (arrivals +0.5 percent, overnight stays –1.0 percent). Persistently high inflation in tourism-related goods and services, combined with continued consumer restraint, resulted in a real decrease in tourism revenues.
