The Economic Development in the "Eastern Region"
This paper constitutes a regional economic analysis of the "east of the eastern region", which basically corresponds to Vienna with its (extended) surrounding districts. In comparison to this analysis region, a core region of districts is highlighted that could benefit most from a sixth Danube crossing in the Lobau area: the trans-Danubian districts in Vienna and Gänserndorf (as well as the region towards Slovakia and the Czech Republic), adding Bruck an der Leitha to the south of the Danube. The report consists of a number of aspects that can shed light on this issue. The picture that emerges is not clear-cut: despite an (increasingly) problematic traffic situation, the region appears to be quite dynamic – but there is evidence that better accessibility could help in exploiting the region's potential. In any case, close cooperation between Vienna and Lower Austria is necessary to realise the potentials from agglomeration and increased integration.
