A Tourism Satellite Account for Lower Austria. The Economics, Methodology and Main Results for 2005 (Summary)

Tourism is of great importance in the Lower Austrian economy: according to the regional tourism satellite account for Lower Austria developed by Statistics Austria and WIFO, expenditure in 2005 on holiday and business trips, visits to relatives and friends, and stays in weekend houses and second homes made up a total of € 2.61 billion. Of this sum, 20.5 percent derived from foreign travellers, 67.3 percent from domestic ones and 12.2 percent from spending by Austrians in their weekend houses and second homes. Tourism achieved a direct value added of about € 1.22 billion, which corresponds to 3.2 percent of the Lower Austrian gross regional product. Direct and indirect effects of tourism in Lower Austria added 6.5 percent to the state's economy in 2005 (based on the input-output table for 2000).
