The world of yesterday is no longer here. In the new era of power politics, Europe is in danger of being torn apart between the USA, Russia and China. While the pandemic has made us painfully aware of foreign trade dependencies and Putin is using energy exports as a weapon, Trump & Co. are taking an axe to the very global trade rules that have made the world richer than ever. China and the USA are decoupling, globalization is to be rolled back. The EU no longer wants free trade agreements, but sanctions against rogue states, supply chain laws and climate protectionism to save the world. Free trade is increasingly giving way to geopolitical and environmental considerations. Germany, Austria and Switzerland are dominated by SMEs and are trade-oriented – their prosperity is at stake.
