Climate neutrality until 2040 requires a fundamental restructuring of our energy system. Security of supply and affordability must be guaranteed, as must competitiveness and progress in decarbonisation. However, this paradigm shift involves challenges: increasing volatility of the system combined with a reduction in flexible power plant capacity, rising demand for electricity due to electrification and sector coupling, slow grid expansion, and geopolitical developments beyond our control.

To overcome these challenges, targeted investments in the European and Austrian energy infrastructure are necessary. Forward-looking framework structures make this possible. The power plant strategy announced in the government programme offers an opportunity to develop solutions at an early stage. How might a forward-looking strategy for Austria, that guarantees security of supply and affordability while also strengthening our competitiveness and paving the way to climate neutrality, look like?

This is what Michael Strebl (CEO of Wien Energie) and Gabriel Felbermayr (WIFO Director) want to discuss.

We are looking forward to an interesting discussion and an exciting exchange with the audience afterwards.
