WIFO-Konjunkturtest

The WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) is a monthly survey of Austrian companies on their economic situation and its development in the coming months. The results of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest help to reliably assess the economic development in Austria at an early stage. The WIFO-Konjunkturtest has been conducted since 1954 and has been part of the "Joint Harmonised EU Programme of Business and Consumer Surveys" since 1996.

The WIFO-Konjunkturampel (Economic Traffic Light) Remains "Green"

May 2021

Sentiment among Austrian companies improved again in May. After an increase of 6.2 points, the WIFO Business Climate Index stood at 18.0 points (seasonally adjusted). This is the highest value since October 2018. The WIFO-Konjunkturampel (economic traffic light) remains "green" and thus confirms the upward trend in the economic assessments of Austrian companies.

Economic Sentiment and Employment Expectations Sharply Improving in Both the EU and the Euro Area.

In May 2021, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) increased again strongly, gaining 4.0 points in both the EU and the euro area compared to April. At 113.9 (EU) and 114.5 (euro area) points, the ESI scores markedly above its long-term average and pre-pandemic level, close to its December 2017 peak. The Employment Expectations Indicator (EEI) also saw an additional strong increase (+2.4 points to 110.3 in the EU and +2.9 points to 110.1 in the euro area), bringing it further above its long-term average in both areas.

Business Impairments, Liquidity and State Aid in the Second COVID-19 Wave

Results of the Fifth Special Survey on the COVID-19 Crisis as Part of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest of February2021

According to the special survey, 72 percent of companies had faced restrictions on their business activities in the past three months. The most important restriction was the reduction of orders (42 percent). Companies in industries directly affected by countermeasures to fight the pandemic mentioned closures ordered by the authorities.

Economy is Picking up Speed

Sentiment among Austrian companies continued to improve in May. After an increase of 6.2 points, the WIFO Business Climate Index was at 18.0 points (seasonally adjusted). This is the highest value since October 2018. Only in those sectors that continued to be affected by COVID-19 restriction measures the situation assessments remained sceptical. However, economic expectations in all sectors signal optimism.

Credit Conditions of Austrian Companies

The credit questions of the WIFO-Konjunkturtest (business cycle survey) allow us to present the assessments and experiences of companies with regard to bank lending. The credit questions are asked quarterly in February, May, August and November.
