Industrielle Produktion wurde erst m\u00f6glich, wenn \u2013 entsprechend qualifizierte \u2013 Arbeitskr\u00e4fte zur Verf\u00fcgung standen; andererseits waren die Einkommen eines gro\u00dfen Teils der erwerbsf\u00e4higen Bev\u00f6lkerung von ausreichenden Arbeitsm\u00f6glichkeiten abh\u00e4ngig. Diese Ambivalenz durchzieht in verschiedener Form die ganze Geschichte der Industriegesellschaft. Die Bedeutung dieses Themas bewirkte, da\u00df sich zahllose \u00f6konomische Studien Problemen des Arbeitsmarktes zuwandten; was freilich kaum existiert, ist ein Versuch, die Entwicklung dieses Marktes vom Beginn der Industrialisierung bis zur Gegenwart f\u00fcr ein Land nachzuzeichnen.
