While in 1988 and 1989 the Western provinces were the major beneficiaries of strong demand from Germany, the \"Eastern region\" (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) managed to catch up in 1990. Activity in that area was boosted by growth forces in manufacturing industry, energy generation, and tourism.
