Die starke internationale Verflechtung der \u00f6sterreichischen Wirtschaft zeigt sich im hohen Anteil von Lieferforderungen an ausl\u00e4ndische Unternehmen von 50%. Es gibt mehrere theoretische Motive f\u00fcr Handelskredite, die auf Kostenvorteilen der Lieferanten oder auf strategischen \u00dcberlegungen beruhen. Exporteure in Industriel\u00e4ndern k\u00f6nnen ihre besseren Finanzierungsm\u00f6glichkeiten an die Importeure in Schwellenl\u00e4ndern weitergeben. Handelskredite erm\u00f6glichen so die Nutzung komparativer Vorteile, erleichtern die Spezialisierung und den Technologietransfer, sie erm\u00f6glichen eine st\u00e4rkere regionale Diversifikation der Exporte und f\u00fchren zu Lerneffekten aus dem internationalen Wettbewerb.
